The Dave Brubeck Quartet - Maori Blues
Right, well I guess it is time once again to blog. Since I'm not out on this lovely Friday night (ok well I guess it IS Saturday now, technically...) I think I should use the time to blog rather than sleep... that can be later.
Well a bit more obsessing about owning a fender rhodes has made me upload this short demo - HERE (164KB) - I suggest you download it right away. Pity it's only 20 seconds, but it's one of the finest samples of a Rhodes I can find. Thanks to Nathan for sending me it in the first place... My search for the real deal hasn't found anything yet - but they seem to go for far too much money on ebay for a decent one... well over $1000 :(. Oh well. I will keep looking.
In the meantime, I've been up to a few things here and there. Last weekend was pretty good, I did so much it all went away so quickly :(. It all started with me driving to work on Friday, I left home at 7:10 and go to work at 9:40... oops a bit late. but still! 2.5 hour drive is just nuts... I'm not going to drive again (famous last words). Or at least I will wait until it is school holidays, because that just plain sucks!
After all that, I get called "boy wonder" at work, which is somewhat scary since I used to be called that at my OLD workplace (mainly by one customer)... and I never told anyone about that at my new work - they just seemed to pick up the name... Soooo I'll just put it down to my 'youthful' *cough* appearance and try not to let it freak me out too much just yet. On the Friday which I was late everyone was looking for me (that's kinda a bad sign, I think). Oh well, nothing was really said.
I then rushed to Central from work and back to my car in the cheap parking station in under 48 minutes for a hair cut. I figured that was a pretty darn good effort, particularly after a tiring week of work & travelling. I did have to run a bit of it (I'm so bad at it...) but yes made it back in time to get the car at 6:01pm (obviously the parking machine thingy doesn't over charge you for being 1 minute late - thank goodness!), and so I parked outside work and went inside again and got a drink haha. Good old free drinks at work is always good. I then drove to Surry Hills to park for Aussie Stadium. It was actually really easy to find parking - free too. I just stopped on the street to check the map to find the best street to park in, and I figured I was close enough anyways. I did a pretty darn good reverse park - so I wasn't going to move now!
I met up with Rex later on for some cold wet chips (they don't tend to travel very well in a plastic bag - but we all knew that already) to watch Sydney FC play Adelaide United at Aussie Stadium. The match probably wasn't as 'clever' as the last match I saw - no outstanding moves from either team - but there were a few goals (compared to no valid goals last time), a streaker, and a partial nut on the field. So it made for an eventful game, which was almost so wet I was fearing we'd all wake up the next day with big nasty colds. We didn't. Yay!
Dropped Rex's bro back at his car and retired to Matto for the night... Ahh it's good to get a good sleep after a long week of work. On Saturday Rex and I went to an "unbirthday" party for Charmayne's favourite soft toy (yes it's quite silly and her mum REALLY did think we were "quite mad" ... oh well). Met up with Rex's high school friend's at Hurstville and ate and played board games all afternoon... was quite good. We were all supposed to bring soft toys but nobody had told me! I have quite a collection (for a guy, I think..) so oh well. Had to just borrow a pingu... yes.
After playing a few games (Cranium, amoung others) we had to say goodbye to Turdy (is that even how you spell 'his' name ?) and head off to Wenty for Wenty Boy's 22nd birthday. It's always good to see a few of my folk from highschool, and Cynthia got to meet a few of them which was good. Biggest downside to the whole day was the lack of ranch... bah! The boy was right though, if he had told me we weren't going to have ranch I wouldn't've come along. hah. No change to jam with Nathan, but I did give him a copy of Unsquare Dance (which is an awesome song) so I think he is enjoying learning that on the piano at the moment. I'm also having a bit of a play of it as well as a harder version of Take 5... which is proving not so hard after all. It sounds good, that's for sure. I took the piano all apart today and cleaned it and polished up all of the brass... it's so shiny now! I love it... I couldn't possibly sell it now. Not that I ever was going to!
I read the other day that the word "Stereo" comes from the word "solid" in Greek, which I thought was really interesting. The point of stereo sound is not to have 2 distinct channels, but instead create a 'solid' sounding aural experience. I thought that makes total sense, and it's a really good way of looking at it.
But I digress... Back to the weekend!
Lately I find myself really avoiding smoke more than usual. I have less and less tolerance for it, and now I will just walk and walk until I can find non-smokey air. It's getting pretty bad... but I guess I feel people should be more considerate than to make my air smelly! heh. I'm not selfish at all now am I...
So after one day of almost drowning in rain at the game, the next day wasn't very wet at all, which was good. I was hoping it wasn't going to rain while we were outside enjoying Turdy's birthday!
I woke up on Sunday morning... or at least I think it was morning.... to eat tasty bbq pork steam buns. Yummo! I hope I didn't lose too many brownie points the previous night by staying up until 3am... I'm told I didn't but still I worry a lot about that kinda thing!
Sunday was spent with me wandering around Sydney on my own little adventure by myself (mostly) like I so often do. I dropped Rex off at work at Novo (hopefully for the last time ever!!) and had a look at JB's at bondi. A few cool things for sale but I wasn't buying. I also looked at Junction Hifi but they appeared to be closed on Sundays. Oh well, next time. I then drove to Domayne at Penrith to visit my bro - and he informs me that one of Craig's step bro's has been in. Hmm Ok... not sure which one it was but there ya go, small world Penno's is :P
I checked out the amps for my parents at Domayne... not exactly sure what they want entirely but I don't think anything there will suit them 100%. I think they will just have to live with whatever!! None of this being fussy about the size of the amp - they're all HUGE! hehe.
I dropped past Ben's for some springrolls... actually I was just seeing how he was. But I knew I couldn't go home without getting some for mum - since she IS addicted after all. So yes thanks to Ben for the rolls. Apparently they were a bit off... hah! Typical Ben - SELLING DODGY FOOD!!!! Nah.. they were fine. Fried them up at home and they were quite tasty.
Well that was about it for the weekend, I really should recap the week but that will have to be another time. The only other remarkable thing was I fixed the little hole in my poor speaker, so it's down in the house for "testing". Had some Jazz on the other night and I must say it sounded pretty awesome. Standing outside, you couldn't tell the speaker was inside and pointing in the opposite direction. So yes it was rather nice, right across the entire frequency range. The other funny thing is Dad rediscovering his childhood through Cat Stevens and Vifa (ie 2 out of 3 drivers are Vifa, the other is Peerless for those who have a CLUE about what I'm on about)... so yes I won't go into details but basically he was having a great time listening to Con my speakers... Ah well. I guess I will be doing the same with crazy groups I liked during my childhood when I go through "that" time of my life......
Coming soon! This week of my life...
