ADSL and CF to IDE for Chinesetown

Well as most you already know, I finally got ADSL out here in the sticks on Monday. After using the very reliable Netcomm InModem 336 for pretty much 10 years (I think that's a record for a dialup modem lasting that long...), I am now the proud owner of a simple but very fast little dlink adsl router.

I signed up with Westnet (well actually, my Mum did, since I'm using her credit card...) last tuesday at around midnight... and it was done by this monday so I reckon that was pretty good going. Especially since I live out here! Just went for a basic 512k plan 14g/14g for the moment, anything more is a bit too expensive.

My thoughts so far? It's pretty good. Of course, having used broadband at work and at uni for the last few years it's nothing new, but having it at home is rather different I reckon.

In other news, I have fixed up the Double Bay Chinese Restaurant computer, this time with a rather nerdy fix I must say. Picked up a Compact Flash to IDE adapter from ebay and installed an old 64MB CF card I had lying around, ghosted across their entire system (woo all 31MB of it) and bam... boots up perfectly. The adapter is mounted on a backing plate so the card itself hangs out the back of the computer a little - just enough so you can eject it from the socket. I guess then my plan is you could take it home and back it up using a simple card reader - perfect! Turned out really well I reckon, so I wonder how it will go when I take it to the restaurant and try it out on the printers.

Anyways enough of the nerdy news, I haven't done a whole lot during this week (well, not since the weekend anyways... will talk about that later tehe). I've seen Rex every day sine Saturday though, which I believe is a new record! She is enjoying her job a little bit I think, although she finds it a bit boring. At least we can spend lunch together, we've usually been going to Observatory Hill which has a great view of the harbour. Casual Friday tomorrow for me! Yay! Pity not for Rex... oh well.

Right time to go back and find more things to download.
