Don't ever buy dBase IV

Just a quick one to say that dBase IV is poo... mainly because it caused so much headaches for me on the weekend! I was fixing up the restaurant computer system and had so many troubles with the menu file... Each time you entered a dish, say, Beef in Black Been Sauce, you would enter BBBS. But the system would select something else, like "In Vegetables" ... joy!!

Anyways long story cut short is that the index file isn't in the same folder as the data file, so it wasn't picking up the right records when you entered the menu code, so it was all stuffed. How annoying! Got that all fixed by figuring out how to use 1988 technology (aka dBase) only to find the same problem also existed with the wine list!

I'll never win!

Ahh well I think it is going OK now. On the weekend (in other news) I also visited my grandmother in Ryde Hospital (poor thing but I think she is recovering OK now), went out for Steamboat at Amy's house (also known as Clement's house but I am told that is incorrect now that he works in Canberra!!) and visited Rex. All-in-all, didn't really achieve anything on the weekend ... but some parts of it were fun.

On Sunday I spent the day wandering around doing pretty much not a whole lot, although I managed to cram in 2 trips to Double Bay (damn dBase... grumble). Also had wood fire pizza which was quite nice but not as nice as Bevo or Pyrmont I reckon. Had some super super crispy wedges too which were so crunchy but very oily also... oh well.

Managed to fit in some painting during last week up in the shed which was good. I got the door, the bin and 2 speakers pretty much finished now. Everything is blue! w00t! I also managed to lift the centre speaker up and mount it in the shed, attached with some builder's strapping. It's quite secure but so damn heavy it was quite a challenge up there on a ladder.... The result: it sounds quite good! Although I do need to finish my front speakers....

I got an order from Electus with some new toys including some speaker sealant (which looks remarkably a lot like blue tack but without the smell), and a powerful luxeon torch. (It's reviewed here for those who are interested). It's pretty funky (oh yes it's the Blaster III Junior on that site). I also got some networking gear and a crimper and some audio/video leads, so that's also quite good. I managed to get 21 tubes of silver heatsink compound, although I only ordered 1. I hope Andrew has sent them back by now... that's $60 of stuff I didn't want/order!!

Otherwise I have been spending a lot of time sleeping on trains and considering the purchase of a Rhodes electric piano... which I'm pretty much at the conclusion of buying one. Phew! It's pretty exciting.

As for this subject of this blog about dBase and buying it... not that you can buy it these days (thanks to Borland) but you wouldn't want to anyway! So no worries there.

I've been playing a bit of LFS lately, which is a lot of fun. I'm considering buying the S2 version (heck, it's only 12 pounds) but I haven't as yet... I also would like one of the new fancy logitech wheels, but it hasn't been released yet.... dammit they better hurry up!!!

Hmm I know I've skipped a lot lately but eh... too busy with other things I guess :P. Tomorrow I am going to the Chaser to be in the studio audience, thanks to Lachlan. So that is pretty exciting as I haven't been in the audience for anything really ever. I always wanted to go to the backberner one but never did before the programme was canned. And it was so good too :'(. Ah well.

That's about it for this Wednesday evening, I haven't really got any further plans for today but we'll see what happens. I think this weekend will be another packed and fun-filled time... with hopefully little involvement with dBase...
