Well I made it! I'm sitting in an internet cafe in Xiamen. It's quite hot and humid here, and everyone
seems to smoke (inside, outside, anyewhere they can) - perhaps it's a stressful place... bh unlikely.
Anyways in answer to Boyter's blow your mind, I don't really get it. It's just like a much, much bigger Chinatown
with less Aussies and no road rules. The taxi driver we got from the airport last night swirved between lanes and
never used a blinker... we actually spent more time halfway between two lanes than being in one lane at a time.
Apart from that, the flight was quite good, pretty smooth and the food was OK (and they seemed to serve quite a lot
despite being late - 11am breakfast and 3pm lunch). It took about 9 hours to get to HK, where we had a 2 hour wait for
a connecting flight to Xiamen (which only took 55 minutes). It's quite an experience cruising along 12,000m above the
Earth's surface at roughly 900km/h. Sure beats travelling in a car! The onboard entertainment was OK - they were playing
the Winter Special episode of Top Gear on the UK style channel which was pretty good. I used my GP2X a bit to pass the time,
but given the noise of the jet there isn't much that you can do to mask it.
Anyways, the city here is quite messy with the roads looking like Main St on the Simpsons and no two paving bricks on the foot
path are alike. I'm going to hunt down a card reader for photos - I should've brought mine from home, but things like
that are so cheap so I will probably just buy another one.
Everyone is welcome to SMS me... ha... if you are bored. We haven't done a great deal since landing last night
(the hotel is fairly comfy with a western toilet - although I experienced the squatnshoot in a restaurant - but only
because I had to, to get the full China experience). The beds in the restaurant don't exactly have much give in them
- I'm tempted to say the carpet has more, but then again it's pretty dirty so you wouldn't go lying on it if you could help it.
Anyways that should probably do for the moment, I'm planning on writing some stuff in a journal thingy without repeating everything twice.
Oh yeah and there is Engrish everywhere here. It seems there are more signs which have dodgy spelling or
poor grammar than ones which are correct. Oh well. Time to wander off now.
